ATRI: Understanding of CSA remains low among truck drivers

Jan. 29, 2014

A new report issued by the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI), the trucking industry’s not-for-profit research organization, this week found that only 42.2% of 7,800 truck drivers successfully passed a test of their knowledge of the Federal Motor Carrier safety Administration’s Compliance Safety Accountability (CSA) program.

By contrast, some 66.5% of law enforcement personnel passed the same CSA knowledge test, ATRI noted.

The group said those results suggest that after three years of implementation drivers do not have a clear understanding of CSA. However, on a more positive note, carrier-provided CSA training has increased steadily since 2011, ATRI emphasized, with driver job security concerns due to CSA decreasing by almost 10% over the last three years since CSA’s implementation.
