April 10, 2015: Higher speeds threaten tires; Feds shut down South Carolina fleet; Technical schools share CNG training.

April 10, 2015

Here is a look at what is happening in the world of transportation this morning:

• The South Dakota Transportation Commission may consider reducing the 80 mph speed limit along stretches of I-90 and I-29, the Rapid City Journal reported. The report noted that commissioners are concerned about the effect of high speeds on truck tires.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is pushing for a regulation that would require electronic speed limiters on big rigs, according to an Associated Press report in the Santa Cruz Sentinel. The agency is expected to contact states with speed limits that are higher than commercial truck tires can handle, according to the Sentinel.

• The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration shut down a trucking fleet in South Carolina after finding the company violated numerous federal regulations, according to Trucking News Online.

• Chippewa Valley Technical College in Wisconsin partners with other state technical colleges to share compressed natural gas-powered rig for the schools’ truck driver training programs, The Dunn County News reported.

Trucking News Online breaks down a global study that shows an increased demand for transportation and logistics services is what’s driving the commercial vehicle market.
