Your July 9 Pre-Trip: International tax plan could help highway funding

Here are five things worth knowing today: 1. Two bipartisan senators, Rob Portman (R-OH) and Charles Schumer (D-NY), delivered a plan yesterday to “overhaul the United States’ decades-old rules on international taxation,” The Hill reports. The Hill added that the senators say the plan could help fund the nation’s roads and bridges. Their plan, according to the report, “looks to shield most offshore corporate income from U.S. taxation” and also calls for tougher rules “to prevent multinational corporations from gaming the system by shifting profits to tax havens.” Additionally, it could potentially help with the highway funding that expires at the end of the month. 2. Two truck drivers – Clinton Blackburn of Morehead, KY, and Mack Guffey of Gainesboro, TN – are among the heroes who have been honored with the Carnegie Medal, American Trucker reports. The medal is given to those who risk their lives to an extraordinary degree while saving or attempting to save the lives of others. American Trucker has more on their accomplishments and the award.3. Actor Tom Selleck is accused of stealing water for his California ranch, according to Fame 10. The actor has allegedly been seen filling up a tanker truck and transporting water back to his ranch at least four times in March, the report said. California is in the middle of a historically bad drought, which has caused many water bans. According to the report, in 2013, Selleck was allegedly ordered to stop trucking water back to his ranch.4. The 36th Annual Walcott Truckers Jamboree begins today and continues for the next few days. According to The Trucker, the event will feature 175 exhibits, a Super Truck Beauty Contest, an antique truck display, a pork chop cookout, and Trucker Olympics games. The Trucker has more.5. A Nebraska senator is introducing legislation to allow a pilot program for CDL holders younger than 21 to practice interstate hauling and delivery, CCJ reports. Deb Fisher introduced the bill in June, and it was referred to the judiciary committee, according to the report.
