Joe Harrison, president of the Alexandria, VA-based American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA) plans to retire from his position at the end of March. A special subcommittee with the aid of a professional search firm aims to have a replacement named by early March.

Harrison has represented moving industry members – national van lines and local moving agents alike – for 26 years as president of AMSA and of the former Household Goods Carriers’ Bureau and the American Movers Conference.

He directed the merger of the Household Goods Carriers’ Bureau and the American Movers Conference in the early ‘90s and the 1998 merger of the American Movers Conference and the National Moving and Storage Association to create AMSA, which today boasts 3,500 members.

Earlier in his career, Harrison served as president of the Bulk Carrier Conference, a tank truck association, and was a member of the National Motor Freight Traffic Association’s Classification Board
