In an effort to burnish the image of natural gas vehicles (NGVs) to both fleets and the U.S. public, the Northwest Gas Assn. (NWGA) has published a white paper that highlights the low cost and “abundant” domestic supply of natural gas.

Entitled Natural Gas Vehicles: Today’s Transportation Solution, the white paper is also split into sections dedicated to highlighting regional success stories and opportunities to expand NGV adoption.

“NGVs are benefiting from natural gas’ low prices and domestic abundance, now estimated at over 100 year’s worth of supply sourced directly from North America,” noted Dan Kirschner, NGWA’s executive director, in a statement. “At current prices the cost of natural gas averages 30% less than gasoline or diesel making NGVs an attractive alternative to companies seeking to reduce vehicle fleet costs.”

He added that, environmentally, the use of natural gas for transportation reduces GHG [greenhouse gas] emissions up to 30% compared with conventional transportation fuels.

“Across most of the world, NGVs’ overall carbon footprint is also smaller than that of electric vehicles when factoring in emissions from coal-generated electricity,” Kirschner said.
