The Truckload Carriers Assn. (TCA) has announced the two grand prize winners of its National Fleet Safety Awards. Stagecoach Cartage & Distribution LP won for truckload companies with under 25 million miles annually and Bison Transport won for companies with total mileage over 25 million annually.

TCA cited specific aspects of each company’s safety programs. Stagecoach was noted for making major investments in technology for its vehicles and for paying close attention to the mental and physical health needs of employees. Bison Transport, winner of its category for the third straight year, was noted for its development of a “Driver Risk Level Assessment” that awards point values for positive and negative risk factors and using specific programs tailored to individual needs to bring the driver to an acceptable level of risk.

The awards, given at the TCA Annual Banquet March 3rd in the Bahamas, were selected from 18 division winners. The factors considered included safety program organization, employee driver/independent contractor selection procedures, training, supervision, accident investigation and inspection and maintenance of equipment, the organization said.

TCA also announced that the late Richard “Buck” Jenkins, co-owner of Diamond Transportation System, Inc., was given the Past Chairman’s Award, presented to industry leaders who make a significant contribution to the business community. Jenkins, a TCA member for 36 years, was the organization’s officer & treasurer from 2000-2004 and chairman of the Bylaws Committee from 1992-1993 and 1997-1998.
