Con-way Truckload has become a participant in the U.S. Dept. of Labor National Apprenticeship Program, the company announced. The program allows eligible veterans and active military members to receive paid, on-the-job training through GI benefits.

Candidates with a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) and a minimum level of truck driving experience can receive up to an additional $1,000 a month in tax-free GI Bill benefits under the apprenticeship program during their first year of employment, Con-way said.

Con-way also offers an accelerated pay increase schedule for veterans with documented military truck driving experience, as well as a formalized driver training program for veterans and reservists without CDL’s or baseline experience.

"This program provides a prime opportunity for those candidates to get the financial support to help them embark on a great new career with us, while we benefit from access to this pool of highly desirable new drivers,” said Herb Schmidt, president, Con-way Truckload. ”It is a tremendously valuable program for both military members and U.S. employers.”

"Making the transition from military to civilian life can be difficult for many soldiers,” said Michael Osborn, a Con-way Truckload driver and U.S. Air Force veteran. "The supplemental income I received during my training with Con-way Truckload was invaluable to my family during that time.”
