Having just introduced an all-new Power Stroke V8 diesel for its light commercial truck line, Ford took the wraps off the redesigned F-Series Super Duty truck that will carry that engine yesterday at the Texas State Fair in Dallas. Designated a 2011 model, the new Super-Duty is also getting other significant powertrain upgrades that will include a new 6.2L V8 gasoline engine and a new heavy-duty 6-spd. automatic transmission designed to complement the new Power Stroke’s low-end torque. Ford’s onboard computer and wireless communications suites – introduced earlier this year in the Ford Transit Connect – lead interior changes for the next version of the company’s most popular work truck model.
The F-Series Super Duty lineup includes F-250, 350, 450 and 550 pickup and chassis/cab models, covering Class 2 through 5 GVW ratings.
While the Ford-designed Power Stroke diesel is the biggest news for the 2011 Super-Duty, the company has also redesigned its gasoline powerplant. Although Ford has not yet released horsepower or torque specifications for the new 6.2L V8, it says both are “significantly improved” over its current gasoline V8. Changes include variable cam timing for both intake and exhaust valves, two spark plugs per cylinder, and more efficient air flow through the crankcase, according to the company.
Designed to complement the new diesel’s torque output, the all-new TorqShift 6-spd. automatic transmission offers a “live drive” PTO to power auxiliary equipment such as snowplows and cement mixers even during stop-start operations. The new 6R140 automatic also features better integration with engine exhaust braking for towing applications and variety of shift modes.
Suspension and chassis changes for the 2011 Super-Duty include a new trailer sway control system integrated with the roll stability system, new steering gear and improved ride, according to Ford.
Towing capacity will see an increase in the new model, which will continue to offer a factory-installed integrated trailer brake controller as an option. New for 2011 will be an optional factory-installed and warranted fifth wheel substructure attached directly to the frame and featuring electrical connections mounted on the side of the bed wall.
Fleets looking for software productivity applications can order an integrated 4.2-in. LCD display as part of the Ford Work Solutions system. Navigation, tracking, messaging, WAN integration with back office systems and even an RFID-based tool tracking application are available to take advantage of the new onboard computer system. The display also offers drivers access to vehicle diagnostic and operational data.
Other interior changes include a new work console option with a 110V power inverter and increased storage space. On the outside, the 2011 Super-Duty gets a redesigned hood and grille to accommodate the new diesel engine.
