U.S. trade official boosts Mexican truck program

Frankin Lavin, Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade said he expects the FMCSA Mexican truck program to begin in July at a Tuesday meeting sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Associated Press reported.

This comment gives the FMCSA a boost from within the Bush administration amidst intense scrutiny from interest groups involved with labor, highway safety, and the environment and Congress.

Currently FMCSA is facing a lawsuit filed by the Teamsters, Public Citizen, Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Assn. and environmental groups alleging that the demonstration project is being implemented illegally.
