    LAS VEGAS. The Truckload Carriers Assn. (TCA) held its annual Awards Banquet on Tuesday, March 13 during the final evening of the annual convention.

    Charles Maly with Nebraska-based Schaffer Trucking, Inc., was named Independent Contractor of the Year. In recognition of his achievement, Maly will receive a new International 9000i tractor, donated by International Truck and Engine Corp. and powered by a Signature ISX 500-hp engine donated by Cummins Engine. Eaton and Dana Corp., Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., National Seating and Velvac Inc. also helped to equip the truck. Other companies donated prizes, as well, from cash to additional equipment.

    The TCA also presented its National Fleet Safety Awards, which are determined by accident frequency per million miles driven in each of six mileage divisions. Grand Prize winners are also evaluated on a number of other safety-related criteria. Don Hummer Trucking of Oxford IA and Bison Transport of Winnepeg, Manitoba, were the Grand Prize winners; Bison in the over 25-million miles category and Don Hummer in the under 25-million miles category.

    On the division level, Specialty Transport of Knoxville, TN took first place in the under 5 million miles division; FTC Transportation, Inc. of Oklahoma City, OK was first in the 5-14.99 million miles division; Cox Transportation Services, Inc. of Ashland, VA was first in the 15 to 24.99 million miles division; Landstar Express America, Inc. took first in the 25 to 49.99 million miles division; Groupe Robert, Inc. was first in the 50 to 99.99 million mile division and Bison Transport earned top honors in the over 100 million miles division.

    Company equipment drivers were honored, too. The Grand Prize winner was Steve Udelhoven with Art Pape Transfer.
