To better secure less-than-truckload (LTL) cargo, Con-way Freight has installed the SafeStack cargo-loading system across its fleet of 16,800 trailers in North America. SafeStack is an adjustable decking and bracing System that is said to eliminate double-stacking while bracing each shipment to prevent in-transit shifting.

“This new system improves how we handle and load freight, brace shipments in the trailer and secure them to prevent shifting in-transit — one of the most common causes of cargo damage,” said Greg Lehmkuhl, executive vp at Con-way Frieght. “Combining these new tools with the experience and superior freight handling skills of our workforce is the formula for delivering consistently excellent service.”

The SafeStack system was supplied by Ancra International. It uses aircraft-quality components, including aluminum tracks that are attached to supporting vertical posts along the trailer walls. Height-adjustable horizontal shoring beams clamp into the vertical tracks and are movable in 1 in. increments to create multiple decking platform positions to handle different sized and shaped packages.

The system also features custom-designed anchors and heavy-duty straps to securely brace and tie down shipments to prevent movement in transit.

“Consistently claims-free, quality service is a critical differentiator in the highly competitive LTL business, and our investment in SafeStack delivers a next-level service that truly enhances value for customers,” said Con-way’s Lehmkuhl.
