LTL Carriers

LTL stands for "less than truckload." When a company must ship less materials than it takes to fill a truck, but more materials than is cost-effective to send using an overnight delivery service, it can call an LTL carrier for an affordable rate. An LTL carrier may send a van to pick up a shipment of this size, or carry several LTL shipments on a single trailer.

Most LTL carriers base their rates on the square footage a shipment occupies in a trailer and the total distance traveled. In many instances, additional costs can be incurred when the shipment exceeds a certain weight, because trailers do have weight limits. When shipping less than one skid, charges may be based on the number of containers and the weight and dimensions of those containers. Various special services, such as insurance on products, shipping hazardous wastes, and Saturday deliveries, are available through many LTL carriers for an additional charge.

LTL carriers either have hubs stationed throughout the United States or North America, or they only deliver goods locally. It is simply impossible for any trucking company to move a partial truckload across the country at a decent rate without the ability to transfer materials from one truck to another.
