Commercial trucks paid more than $34.4 billion in federal and state highway-user taxes in 2010, according to the American Trucking Assns. That is just one of the facts about the trucking industry contained in the latest edition of the ATA’s American Trucking Trends 2011.

Trends is published by ATA’s commercial division, ATA Business Solutions.

“For over 60 years, Trends has provided a profile of the dynamics shaping the trucking industry,” ATA President & CEO Bill Graves said. “It is the singularly most important guide to trucking facts and figures and also serves as a vital source of information on major trucking and transportation issues.”

Among the other facts in this year’s edition is that there are nearly 164,000 women working in the industry, which employs nearly seven million people, including three million drivers. Texas has the most people employed in the industry, although Nebraska ranks first on a percentage basis.

Also, in 2010, trucks consumed 33.9 billion gallons of diesel fuel while traveling more than 108 billion miles.

“Trendsgives us a snapshot of important information that decision makers and policy makers need to guide them,” said ATA chief economist Bob Costello. “The data collected here is just as important in the board room as it is in the hearing room.”

American Trucking Trends 2011is available from ATA Business Solutions and participating state trucking associations.
