The Worldtrucker online community has been launched by Sweden’s Volvo Trucks, which aims to make it the largest and most active Internet-based truck driver communication portal in the world. By offering an Internet community to drivers, the global truck builder said it hopes to boost interest in the driving profession and support the recruitment of new drivers.

“We know that truck drivers have strong professional pride, and that’s exactly what Worldtrucker is about – sharing that passion for trucks and for life on the road,” said Paula Kühnel, manager of the community’s web site.

She said the online community attracted almost 10,000 members during the development stages. As of now, local community operations have been established in 10 countries. With this final update, including a mobile phone version and design upgrade, the community has been launched on a global scale, Kühnel noted.

“It was decided from the start that Worldtrucker would be open to anyone interested in trucks regardless of the brand they use, with Volvo Trucks as a company maintaining a low profile and letting members build the content,” she added. “Most haulage firms have various truck makes in their fleets. All their drivers should feel equally welcome.”

Kühnel pointed out that the Worldtrucker community should also help drivers keep in touch with their families and friends, letting them do thing such as share photos from the road by uploading directly through their mobile phones-- making it possible to stay in touch without carrying a laptop.

By offering these social elements, it hopes to stimulate the driver’s working life and increase interest in the profession, she stressed.
