Veteran trucking executive Thomas Glaser is joining Arnold Transportation Services – a subsidiary of Chattanooga, TN-based TL carrier U.S. Xpress Enterprises – as president and plans to assume day-to-day operating responsibility for Arnold on August 2.

Glaser sports a long and distinguished career in the trucking industry, most recently serving as president & COO for Indianapolis-based TL carrier Celadon Group. He’s also held senior operations and sales positions for the former Contract Freighters, Inc., now part of Con-way Truckload.

"Tom has excelled by getting each of his prior organizations to function as a well-disciplined team,” said Max Fuller, U.S. Xpress co-chairman. “We look forward to his valuable input and proven execution abilities as we continue to carry out the current operating plan at Arnold.”

U.S. Xpress has gradually increased both its financial stake and operational ties in the regional carrier since it originally purchased a 49% stake in Arnold for $6.4 million back in October 2004. U.S. Xpress later raised its ownership stake in the company to 80% in 2006.

U.S. Xpress’ Fuller said at the time of the original investment in Arnold – which operates around 900 tractors and just over 4,000 trailers – that the deal served to expand capacity and access to more customers for both carriers.

“It gives us vitally needed capacity at a low cost, while Arnold gets access to more diverse – and profitable – freight volumes,” he noted. “We can help Arnold is a lot of ways, especially by giving them more depth with customers and more purchasing power for fuel, tires, and financing. We get incremental capacity at a lower cost than if we went out and bought that many trucks ourselves.”
