Union Pacific (UP) and Norfolk Southern (NS) are expanding their joint intermodal freight rail service to offer six-day delivery between Los Angeles and the Southeastern U.S. starting in February.

Omaha, NE-based UP and Norfolk, VA-based NS said their six-day service between Los Angeles and Atlanta, GA complements their existing BlueStreak service— a five-day joint intermodal service the two rail giants began offering between L.A. and the southeast five years ago.

Don Seale, NS’ executive vp & chief marketing officer, added that both railroads will also boost train capacity between UP’s Los Angeles terminals and NS terminals in Atlanta, Charlotte and Greensboro, N.C., Jacksonville, FL, Savannah, GA, Charleston, S.C., and Miami. They also plan to cut BlueStreak’s five-day cycle down to 4.5 days, while shifting domestic and international traffic to a new, shorter route to the Shreveport, LA gateway by the third quarter
