UPS has announced an order of twelve zero-emission electric vehicles from Modec, with six vehicles to be introduced in the UK and six in Germany. The six UK vehicles will be added to UPS’s fleet in February 2009, the company said.
According to UPS, the order follows a successful nine-month trial of the vehicle earlier this year in North-West, East and Central London where it averaged 18 miles per day and a battery consumption of 25% of full charge per day during the course of its operations.
Each vehicle can currently go 100 miles on an overnight charge, and future models will be able to increase the range up to 150 miles per two-three hour charge, the company added.
"This order represents an important step towards making our fleet and operations more sustainable in the UK,” said Jim Barber, managing director, UPS UK & Ireland. “At UPS, we have an ongoing commitment to reducing our carbon footprint, and we are continually assessing how to make the best use of alternatively fuelled vehicles on a global level.”
UPS operates the transportation industry's largest private fleet of alternative fuel vehicles, with vehicles in use in Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Mexico, the UK and the US, the company said.
