Owners of two New York trucking companies working on the redevelopment project at the World Trade Center have been charged with embezzling more than $1 million by underpaying and withholding benefits to employees.

Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn announced charges last week. One of the companies had a 2007 contract to take dirt and debris from the lower Manhattan WTC site to landfills in New York, Long Island and in New Jersey, according to a report in the Sacramento Bee. The men charged were not named in the report.

Prosecutors allege the owners submitted false paperwork stating he had paid union workers the required hourly wage and benefits for the job.

The truck owners are charged with embezzlement, mail fraud and tax evasion. If convicted, the men would each face up to 20 years in prison.
