United Steelworkers Local 1023 members ratified a new four-year contract with Yokohama Tire Corp. yesterday. The union represents workers at Yokohama’s Salem, VA, plant.

“This is a substantial contract with workable solutions,” Rex Simpson, Yokohama vp--administration, said in a press release. “Both sides were professional and cordial throughout negotiations, and both secured some of the changes they sought. When we signed-off on the agreement, everyone was comfortable with it. It’s safe to say both sides feel good about the process and the result.”

Among the highlights of the contract, according to Yokohama, is a “no closure’ agreement for the plant during the contract; an improved cost of living structure; the continuation of the union’s current pension plan, and several new and updated safety and health measures.
