Pump prices for both diesel and gasoline fuel increased across much of the U.S., most likely in response to Hurricane Irene, which ravaged the Eastern seaboard over the weekend.

The average cost for a gallon of gasoline rose just over 4 cents to $3.627 versus $3.581 last week, according to data tracked by the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Curiously, however, average prices dropped nearly 2 cents per gallon in the New England area, falling to just over $3.721 per gallon compared to $3.734 last week.

Diesel fuel prices went up a penny per gallon on average in the U.S., rising to $3.82 from $3.81 last week.

Again, the East Coast witnessed a slight falloff in pump prices, though a very mild one, with the per-gallon cost of diesel dropping from $3.844 to $3.843 this week, with the New England and Central Atlantic states witnessed a nearly 2 cent drop in prices, registering declines of 0.017 and 0.014 cents per gallon, respectively, according to EIA.
