Con-way Freight has broken ground on a new,state-of-the-art facility in San Antonio, TX. The fleet service center will include 105 doors and cover 41,500 sq. ft. It will serve as the local hub for daily freight P&D service, the company said. It will also handle nightly “re-ship” operations connecting San Antonio with one-, two-, and three-day service destinations in Con-way’s national network.

It will also serve as a gateway for freight moving to and from Mexico.

Con-way Freight employs 104 at its current local facility, a 48-door service center. But the carrier anticipates adding over 50 additional positions once the center opens.

“The City commends Con-way Freight for choosing to expand its operations in San Antonio with a $10 million investment on the East Side that will create 56 new jobs,” said San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro. “Con-way Freight has been a great corporate citizen since 1989 and continues to be a key player in the city's targeted logistics and distribution industry.”

Construction on the center, which will cover 30 acres, is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2011. It has been designed to grow to as many as 160 doors, allowing Con-way Freight the opportunity for future expansion if necessary.

More than 1 million pounds of freight per day is handled by Con-way Freight in San Antonio ,with 45 tractors and 156 trailers in daily operation.

The new center will also house a five-bay maintenance facility and will have its own fueling facility and diesel fuel storage on site.

“This expanded facility is an important investment for our company, providing expanded capacity in a key location for our network, and giving us flexibility to grow with the San Antonio community,” said Neil Smith, area vp of operations.

“We thank the San Antonio City Council and Bexar County Commissioner’s Court for their ongoing support as we deepen our ties with this leading Texas community and participate n its overall economic growth,” he added.
