The race for the 2005 Truck-Lite Trophy for the championship of the National Assn. Of Show Trucks was extremely tight, according to the sponsor, with series winners determined only at the last show of the season.

And the winners are:

1st Place/National Champion: Pierre Cinq-Mars, Iron Bridge, Ontario

2nd Place/Runner-up: Bo Trout, Tecumseh, MI

3rd Place: Neil Finegan, Jr., Litchfield, MI

Cinq-Mars won for his red 2002 Western Star (pictured) dubbed the “Maple Leaf Pride” — boasts 313 Truck-Lite lamps, a mural of a maple leaf on the hood and of a Canada lynx on each side.

“With consumers increasingly buying large, valuable items sight unseen on the Internet, through catalogs, and on television, we believe that the home delivery segment is going to continue to grow at an attractive rate.”

The Smithsonian Institution's National Postal Museum has announced that Freightliner will donate a Columbia cab-cutaway to be featured in “Networking a Nation: Star Route Service,” an exhibit opening Feb. 21 in the museum's transportation gallery.

“The cab-cutaway from Freightliner Trucks is an exciting addition to the National Postal Museum's exhibits,” says museum director Allen Kane. “From behind the cab's steering wheel, visitors can gain a whole new perspective on how mail is moved.”

Over 150 years ago, the post office expanded mail service and hired contractors to serve new routes. These contractors were required to haul the mail with “celerity, certainty, and security.” Weary of penning these words in ledgers, postal clerks substituted “* * *,” leading to the “Star Route” designation.

“We are very proud of the vital role Freightliner vehicles have played in the postal industry's history,” says Jonathan Randall, director of product marketing for Freightliner Trucks. “Through this cab-cutaway exhibit, people who might not normally see the inside of a truck will be able to enjoy the firsthand experience of being inside a real-life big rig.”

Crafted by Ernest West from a 1972 Peterbilt 359 and an RV retrieved from his backyard in Denton, TX, this truly mobile home runs just about full time as West travels the country. “I had the idea a long time ago to turn my favorite truck into a mobile home,” he tells FleetOwner. “It's all hand — done, but I'm still getting all the bugs out of it.” So far his home on wheels has been more than lucky. “A tornado almost wrecked it once and we've survived quite a few thunder storms,” says West. “We do all right out here.”
