Cummins to roll out beefier diesel for Ram pickups

Feb. 24, 2011
Engine maker Cummins Inc. plans to release the new “High Output” rating for its 6.7 liter turbocharged diesel for Ram Trucks’ line of heavy duty pickups by the second quarter this year – a new rating that offers up to a peak of 800 lb-ft of torque at 1600 rpm, to beef up available power across a wider engine speed range

Engine maker Cummins Inc. plans to release the new “High Output” rating for its 6.7 liter turbocharged diesel for Ram Trucks’ line of heavy duty pickups by the second quarter this year – a new rating that offers up to a peak of 800 lb-ft of torque at 1600 rpm, to beef up available power across a wider engine speed range.

Cummins added that its new “High Output” 6.7L delivers up to 46 additional hp at typical highway cruising speeds while maintaining 350 horsepower at 3000 rpm.

“The 6.7-liter Turbo Diesel's base engine is the Cummins ISB, which is used in a variety of demanding applications and can produce significantly higher ratings than what is offered in pickup trucks,” said Scott Henry, chief engineer for the Cummins Turbo Diesel.

“The crankshaft dampener was the only engine part that we needed to change as a result of the increased torque,” he added. “Customers really get the best of both worlds. They get high-output torque, along with the durability and low cost of ownership expected from an inline six cylinder diesel engine.”

The company noted it will begin producing its High Output 6.7L engines at its Columbus Mid Range Engine Plant and that they’ll be available in Ram Heavy Duty pickups with the automatic transmission option.
