The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the Clean Trucks program aimed at modernizing the vehicles that serve the Port of Long Beach, CA, in an attempt to cut truck-related air pollution there 80% by 2012. Only “clean” trucks will be permitted to work at the Port, which has also imposed maintenance, security and health insurance requirements. The Board plans to offer one-time financial incentives to truck operators to help with the purchase of newer trucks.

Trucks built before 1989 are banned as of Oct. 1, 2008; beginning Jan. 1, 2010, only trucks built after 1993 will be allowed; and by Jan. 1, 2012, all trucks must meet 2007 EPA emissions standards.
