LTL carrier Saia, Inc. is adding a second terminal in the Chicago metro area to handle additional freight volumes coming from the Midwest.

Saia said shipments moving through Chicago increased 24% this year vs. 2005, so it needed a second terminal to handle that extra demand. The addition of its second Chicago metro facility, located in Markham, IL, brings the total number of the company’s terminals in the U.S. to 129.

The carrier added that its new Markham terminal will have 67 doors and 7,000-sq.-ft. of office space staffed initially by 60 employees. It will provide next-day service to the Midwest market including Chicago and Minneapolis, Iowa, Missouri, portions of Nebraska and Tennessee and Wisconsin.
