FleetOwner executive editor David Cullen was recognized by The American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE) with the prestigious Stephen Barr Award for Feature Writing for his work on “Fuel: Diesel and Beyond.” The organization of business journalists also awarded FleetOwner six Azbee Awards for Editorial and Design Excellence, including four national awards lauding a major feature article, the annual buyer’s guide, a special supplement and a front cover design.

The cover story for FleetOwner’s August 2007 issue, “Fuel: Diesel and Beyond” included contributions from the entire editorial staff, who all shared the gold Azbee for feature stories.

“The writing was distinctive in its clarity,” said one Stephen Barr Award judge. “And it provided a real service for its readers — myself included — by explaining the pros and cons of the different alternatives available to an industry that lives or dies on the price of the fuel.”

In addition, the magazine received silver awards on the national level for its annual buyer’s guide (Oct ’07) and the front cover of the annual buyer’s guide (Oct ’07). The special supplement “Can You Survive?” (Nov ’07) garnered a bronze.

In ASBPE's Northeast chapter competition, FleetOwner was awarded two regional Azbees: A gold award for the “New Models” computer-generated front cover design (Jul ‘07) and a silver award for “Editor’s Page” (Jul & Aug ‘07).

The annual Stephen Barr Award is named for one of the ASBPE’s most-honored journalists, who died of cancer in 2002 at the age of 43. Unlike other ASBPE awards which focus on publication excellence, it honors individual writing from among the best entries in all editorial feature categories, “especially work that reflects the qualities of inventiveness, insight, balance, depth of investigation, and impact on readers,” according to ASBPE.
