Executing what it calls a “re-engineering” of its operating network, less-than-truckload carrier Con-way Freight said it has cut a full day from its transit times to 460 U.S. destinations, eliminating 58.6 million pounds of carbon emissions in the process.

“At Con-way Freight, we’re always looking for ways to improve service performance for our customers and lessen our impact on the environment. Now, advanced technology has enabled us to continuously evaluate ways to move freight more efficiently and directly from origin to destination, reducing miles, handling and fuel consumption along the way,” said Greg Lehmkuhl, executive vp of operations. “This network re-engineering will reduce transit times for our customers, while helping them control inventory, manage supply chain costs and ultimately get product to market faster.”

The company projects a fuel savings of 2.6 million gallons annually and a reduction of 16.6 million operating miles. The move creates more direct routes along lanes operating between Southern Texas and the Northeast, Chicago and Southern Florida, and Chicago and Southern Texas. It will also reduce re-handling of freight, Con-way said.

Advanced simulation modeling techniques and predictive modeling technology helped Con-way identify opportunities for more efficiency along the routes.

“The changes made possible through our predictive modeling technology are part of a long-term approach to continuous improvement and optimized network design that maximizes the use of our existing infrastructure,” said Lehmkuhl.
