At its annual meeting last month in Las Vegas, the Truckload Carriers Assn. (TCA) elected Dave Berry, vp of Swift Transportation Co., to be its 2005-2006 chairman. Berry's previous service with TCA includes serving as a board member for nearly a decade, acting as first vice chairman for 2004-2005, and chairing the North American Transportation Management Institute.

Elected to serve with Berry until the group's next annual convention were:

  • First vice chairman Barry Pottle, president, Pottle's Transportation, Bangor, ME

  • Second vice chairman Jim O'Neal, president, O & S Trucking, Springfield, MO

  • Secretary Kevin Burch, president, Jet Express, Dayton, Ohio

  • Treasurer Ray Haight, president & COO, MacKinnon Transport, Guelph, Ontario, Canada

  • Association vice chairman to ATA Clifton Parker, president, G&P Trucking Co., Gaston, SC

  • Immediate past chairman Lance Craig, president, Craig Transportation Co., Perrysburg, OH

Officers elected at-large were:

  • Robert Baylor, president, Baylor Trucking, Milan, IN

  • John Kaburick, president, Earl L. Henderson Trucking Company, Salem, IL

  • Chris Kozak, president, Willis Shaw Express, Elm Springs, AR

  • Robert Stranzeck, president, Cresco Lines, Inc., Harvey, IL

TCA also announced that the grand prize winners in its 2004 National Fleet Safety Awards competition were Marten Transport of Mondovi, WI (for companies operating over 25-million miles annually) and Pottle's Transportation of Bangor, ME (for companies operating under 25-million miles annually). TCA said both firms “strive to meet stringent standards in their overall safety programs” and were judged “to be the best in their commitment to improving safety on our nation's highways.”

Frank Bove of Gas City, IN-based United Cartage Co. received TCA's Past Chairmen's Award, which is the highest award of recognition given by the association. Bove's company has been a member of TCA for 45 years and he is one of only four persons who have served twice as a TCA officer.

At the TCA meeting, the Professional Truck Driver Institute (PTDI) presented its seventh annual Lee J. Crittenden Memorial Award to Herb Fotheringham, PTDI certification specialist and consultant.

The award is given to the person who has done the most to advance the ideals and goals of the Professional Truck Driver Institute, a nonprofit organization sponsored by the trucking industry to advance truck driver training, proficiency, safety, and professionalism.

“Herb's dedication, support and loyalty to PTDI have been demonstrated through and through to the Institute — its schools both current and future,” said Ray Haight, president & COO of MacKinnon Transport, Inc., chairman of PTDI. “His patience and availability is a glowing example of the 110% commitment to all who have worked with him — and he more than deserves this award.”
