Women In Trucking president to speak at Australian conference

June 18, 2012

Transport Women Australia LTD’s annual conference to be held in Melbourne, Australia, will include an international perspective from Ellen Voie, president & CEO of the Women In Trucking Assn. (WIT).

Voie was invited to speak by Pam McMillan, chairwoman of the organization, who felt the relationship would be beneficial for both organizations, “for us to have an international speaker and for you (WIT) to show how your influence has spread on an international basis.”

Transport Women Australia LTD was formed in 2000 to promote the contribution women make to the industry and to pursue their right for input in transportation related issues and policies. They offer scholarships and seminars and conduct research to benefit small trucking operations. In addition, the group meets with government officials in regard to issues and research findings to promote transportation development across Australia.

Voie’s presentation will provide an international perspective to the attendees and will highlight the success of WIT in the United States, where women comprise 5% of the driving population. Australia, which has approximately 400,000 heavy trucks, is a more rugged environment for women who choose trucking as a career.

The Transport Women Australia LTD conference is called, “Moving with the Times,” and will be held at the Holiday Inn Tullamarine near the Melbourne airport Sept. 22-23, 2012.

Women In Trucking was established to encourage the employment of women in the industry, promote their accomplishments and minimize obstacles faced by women working in the trucking industry. Membership is not limited to women, as 16% of its members are men who support the mission. For more information on WIT visit www.WomenInTrucking.org or call 888-464-9482.
