Idaho House backs bigger trucks on more state highways
March 28, 2013
The Idaho House of Representatives has voted to back a measure that will allow 129,000-lb trucks on more miles of highway in the state— including U.S. Highway 95, according to an Associated Press report posted by The Republic of Columbus, IN. The state Senate had already approved the proposal, which expands the routes available to bigger trucks.
Larger trucks are already allowed south of the Snake River.Representatives voted 49-18 for the timber industry-backed measure.
Rep. Kelley Packer (R) of McCammon said she's convinced the bill makes sure that that local highway districts, cities and towns have adequate control over whether to allow the big rigs on their roads.
However, Rep. Cindy Agidius (R) of Moscow objected to the proposed expansion, arguing that it is being forced on northern Idaho by shippers without respect to the wishes of residents there.
