UPS COO to become CEO in September

June 10, 2014
A leadership change will take place for United Parcel Service (UPS) on September 1 this year, with current COO David Abney stepping up to become CEO as Big Brown’s current chief executive and chairman, Scott Davis, retires and assumes the role of non-executive chairman.

Abney, 58, becomes the 11th chief executive officer in the 107-year history of UPS. He started with the parcel delivery carrier in 1974 as a part-time package loader.

Prior to becoming COO, Abney (at right) served as president of UPS International where he led the expansion of the company's global logistics capabilities and as president of SonicAir, a same-day delivery service that signaled UPS's move into the service parts logistics sector. He also led the UPS team that purchased the Fritz Companies, one of Big Brown’s largest acquisitions.

Davis, 62, and a 29-year veteran of the company, joined UPS in 1986 when UPS acquired the technology company II Morrow, where he served as CEO.

He became CEO of UPS in 2001 and in 2006 was named vice chairman and was elected to the UPS Board of Directors that same year. He became CEO and chairman on January 1, 2008.
