New report marks growth of toll roads in U.S.

June 30, 2015

A new report issued by the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association (IBTTA) indicates that the number of trips taken by drivers on tolls roads increased 14% over the last four years – from 5 billion trips in 2011 to 5.7 billion in 2015 – with further data from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) tracking a 9% increase in overall toll road mileage within the U.S., from 5,431 miles in 2011 to over 5,932 miles as of 2013.

IBTTA’s study, 2015 Report on Tolling in the U.S., also marked an increase in the use all-electronic tolling (AET), indicating that there are 37 million electronic toll accounts across the U.S. – an increase of 20% percent in the past five years, the group said.

Other data compiled by IBTTA’s report include:

  • The fatality rate on toll roads is about one-third (0.50) the rate of all U.S. roads (1.47 per 100 million vehicle miles traveled);
  • More than $14 billion in capital investment was made over three years by the top 40 U.S. toll facilities;
  • More than $13 billion in toll revenues were collected in the U.S. in 2013.

The group’s study also ranked the top 10 toll agencies by mileage in the U.S. as well:

  • Oklahoma Turnpike Authority – 605 miles
  • Florida Turnpike Enterprise – 594 miles
  • New York State Thruway Authority – 570 miles
  • Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission – 554 miles
  • New Jersey Turnpike Authority – 321 miles
  • Illinois Tollway – 286 miles
  • Ohio Turnpike Authority and Infrastructure Commission – 241 miles
  • Kansas Turnpike Authority – 236 miles
  • Indiana Toll Road (ITR) Concession Company LLC – 157 miles
