Key takeaways

  • The partnership: WEX named Engine a Preferred Travel Partner to consolidate fuel and travel spend into a single platform.
  • Driver retention: The solution reduces driver stress by eliminating the need for personal funds or corporate pins at hotel check-in.
  • Cost control: Fleet managers gain real-time visibility into total trip costs, with expenses segmented by individual trips for better P&L tracking.
  • Scalability: The platform is currently being utilized by fleets ranging from five-truck operations to enterprise carriers with over 2,500 power units.

For a truck driver who has been on the road all day, checking into a hotel should be a moment of rest, not a bureaucratic adventure. To eliminate the friction of out-of-pocket spending and complex reimbursements, WEX recently named Engine as its preferred travel partner.

The partnership allows WEX fleet mobility customers to reserve and pay for hotel rooms via a mobile application that uses the same payment backend as WEX fuel cards.

Consolidating the P&L

Beyond giving drivers another amenity, the partnership can also benefit fleet managers and executives who travel for business.

  • Seamless transactions: The integration eliminates needs for drivers or other employees to use personal cards or navigate clunky check-in processes.
  • Enhanced visibility: Each individual cost is segmented to specific trips, providing managers with a clear P&L perspective.
  • Built-in savings: Fleets gain access to enterprise-grade travel discounts previously reserved for mega-carriers.

Taking care of the driver

A hotel room for fleet drivers can be a bonus amenity or simply a safe place to rest, as many fleets continue to face truck parking challenges across the U.S.

Noel Glasgow, WEX head of sales, told FleetOwner during the Truckload Carriers Association’s (TCA) annual convention that fleets of all sizes—from five-truck operations to enterprise fleets with thousands of drivers—are already seeing early success with the platform.

“If you talk to trucking companies today, the one thing they want to take care of is their drivers,” Glasgow said. “Giving them a chance to stay at a hotel and making the process very seamless and very simple… It’s the reason why we’re seeing success early.”
