A drive down into SubTropolis

July 22, 2014
So back in June when I got to test drive Ford Motor Co.’s new Transit full size van in and around Kansas City, MO, I also got to visit one of the more unique industrial complexes you’ll find in the U.S.: SubTropolis.

This massive facility, carved out of a 270-million-year-old limestone rock deposit, houses some 50 companies engaged in a wide variety of operations – including automotive suppliers supporting Ford’s Transit van and other vehicles built at the OEM’s nearby Kansas City Assembly Plant.

At first, I got an eerie feeling driving down into SubTropolis, unsure of just what the place would be like.

But after a few minutes spent in a vehicle aftermarket facility operated within SubTropolis by Knapheide, I felt much more at ease. Indeed, after a few minutes, you don’t even realize you’re in an underground facility.

[The video below provides an overview of SubTropolis along with some history of the place as well.]

Indeed, it’s not every day you get to visit an office complex that’s over 270 million years old, nor one that’s built underground to this extent.
