It’s all about the java, Joe …

Sept. 28, 2015
Coffee is the essential fuel for my workday – if not my life as a whole. There’s just no getting around it. Ever since college, it’s been that necessary liquid additive to prime the proverbial cranial pump of literary activity residing between my ears.
Coffee is the essential fuel for my workday – if not my life as a whole. There’s just no getting around it. Ever since college, it’s been that necessary liquid additive to prime the proverbial cranial pump of literary activity residing between my ears.

[There’s also the unfortunate fact severe headaches will occur if I forgo my daily influx of coffee – due, of course, to the caffeine contained within said java. But caffeine dependence is a topic for another day!]

Coffee is far and away the drink of choice for truck drivers, which should come as no surprise to anyone.

(As a side note, you can read about efforts to craft the “best coffee on the interstate” here and here.)

But now a new survey by office supplies provider Staples discerns that coffee is a prime ingredient for a large chunk of workers across the U.S. business spectrum; in fact, its poll found that 37% of American workers say they can’t even get dressed for work without their first cup of coffee.

On top of that, nearly half of American workers consume at least three cups of coffee each day.

“Businesses are always looking for ways to jumpstart employee productivity – leading to increased market share and sales – but the one tried and true method for decades has been a cup of coffee,” noted Laura Stack, an author of books on workplace productivity trends, in comments regarding the survey’s results. “There’s nothing quite like coffee to keep employees engaged, alert and happy at work.”

Here’s a further batch of fun coffee-related statistics compiled by Staples from its poll:

  • Some 44% of U.S., workers said they can’t have a conversation or commute without coffee.
  • Another 40% can’t check email without that first cup of java, with 38% of U.S. employees unable to eat their first meal of the day without that initial jolt of Joe.
  • Over 57% of U.S. workers said they need at minimum at least two cups of coffee to feel productive and alert.
  • Finally, three out of four U.S. employees said they would give up social media instead of coffee.

Now, with all of that out of the way, time to go brew myself another pot of the black stuff!
