KLLM Transport Services has enhanced security measures at its terminals, and at the request of customers the company is in the process of issuing photo identification cards to its 1,700 drivers. The actions are in response to the changing security needs of both shippers and carriers.>p? “The improved security measures are part of the company’s efforts to protect the well being of our drivers, our equipment and our customers. Today’s environment requires a higher level of security, and we are providing it”, said Jim Richards, KLLM’s senior vice-president for sales and customer service. “Although KLLM’s terminals are gated and fenced, the company has retained around-the-clock third party security services for facilities that were not already manned 24 hours per day.”

In addition to the improvements at terminals, KLLM is producing photo-identification cards for its drivers. Since December 1, 2001, 650 drivers have received ID cards issued at company terminals in Jackson, MS and Bastrop, LA. The cards use a digital image of the driver combined with the driver’s name, employee number, date of hire, job classification, and an ID expiration date on the front side.

The reverse side contains the driver’s hazardous material training certification. A wallet card, and a clip-on badge for display at customer sites, are laminated and given to drivers. Newly hired drivers receive cards while participating in KLLM’s required orientation and training program.
