Disaster relief efforts in southwest Florida got a boost when Jacksonville FL-based Winn-Dixie Stores Inc donated its one million-square-foot warehouse facility to the American Red Cross for 90 days. The warehouse will serve as the central distribution center for the Hurricane Charley disaster relief effort by the Red Cross

Red Cross officials expect to use about 425,000 square feet of the warehouse facility as a logistics center for distributing emergency supplies, water, and food for victims of Hurricane Charley in the affected areas of central and southwest Florida.

Smithfield Packing Co of Plant City FL is donating 140,000 pounds of meat products to America's Second Harvest of Tampa Bay. The meat, valued at $260,000, will provide 560,000 meals for victims of the hurricane. Smithfield Packing Co, a subsidiary of Smithfield Foods Inc, supplies fresh pork, case-ready pork, and processed meats to the foodservice, retail, and international markets.
