Magnum keeps its cool in high ambient temps
Thermo King Corp's new Magnum container reefer unit saves power, protects the environment, reaches setpoint faster, and maintains -35° C box temperature in a 50° C ambient.
Magnum demonstrates superior temperature control, faster pulldown, and reduced power consumption, according to independent tests conducted by Cambridge Research Technology (CRT) and by Forschungszentrum für Kaletechnik und Wärmepumpen GmbH Weidendamm (FKW), an independent consulting company based in Hanover, Germany.
With most cargo boxes, heat leakage increases at a rate of 3% to 5% per year. But even when factoring in heat leakage of a 15-year container, the Magnum unit can maintain the deep-frozen cargo in a 50° C ambient, which extends usable box life. The thermal aluminum coating of the digital scroll compressor also helps it withstand tough environmental conditions.
The FKW report also gives Thermo King high marks for Magnum's simple design that operates with fewer controlling devices. Magnum maintains any box temperatures while reducing overall energy consumption an average of 30%. CRT and FKW testing revealed that the Magnum could cut power costs compared with R-134a reciprocating equipment.
Magnum also has a lower Total Equivalent Warming Impact (TEWI) than other containers, according to Thermo King.
