J & J Snack Foods Corp has acquired the Whole Fruit sorbet and Fruit-A-Freeze frozen fruit bar brands, along with related assets including a manufacturing facility in Norwalk CA, from a subsidiary of CoolBrands International Inc. J & J owns and manufactures Luigi's Real Italian Ice and licenses the Minute Maid brand name for frozen novelty products.

The acquired brands had been experiencing declining sales for several years with sales of about $10 million in 2006.

J & J has manufacturing facilities in Pennsauken, Bridgeport, and Bellmawr NJ; Scranton, Hatfield, and Chambersburg PA; Carrollton TX; Atlanta GA; and Vernon CA.

Based in Markham, Ontario, CoolBrands said its operations now consist of contract production of ice cream and frozen yogurt at a Russellville AR plant. That site employs 37 of the 40 remaining CoolBrands workers.

The company also can no longer make frozen treats using the Crayola and Godiva brands after it defaulted on licensing agreements.
