The planned Boerman-Carroll Dairy in Carroll County, Indiana, has received a permit from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
With about 4,100 cows and 50 dairy calves, this $25 million operation will be situated on a 140-acre site near Cutler IN and should produce around 25,000 gallons of milk daily. Construction on the dairy, which Gerritt Arendsen owns, is expected to begin later in spring 2007. About 30 employees are anticipated when it's operating.
The dairy will use a concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO), which has created concerns from area residents over possible air, water, and ground contamination. However, according to Daryl Smith, the Carroll County Economic Development Corp director, this dairy will be beneficial to the county. He said Arendsen plans to use local resources wherever possible for his operation.
