The Small Business Liability Reform Act of 2001 has received a warm aftermarket welcome and endorsement from the Automotive Parts and Service Alliance (APSA).

This federal legislation (HR 1805 and S.865) seeks to limit punitive damages against small businesses, to ensure that small business owners are only held liable for damages in proportion to their actual fault, and to reform the current product liability system to improve protection of companies that sell or lease products, but do not manufacture them.

APSA used the recent Aftermarket Legislative Summit to promote congressional support for the measure. Sponsors include Reps Asa Hutchinson (R-AR) and Tim Holden (D-PA), and Sens Mitch McConnel (R-KY) and Joseph Lieberman (D-CT).
