The Kroger Co donated 20 million pounds of food to America's Second Harvest in 2002, the domestic hunger relief organization. Valued at $35 million, the donation ranked among the largest in the Cincinnati OH-based retail grocery giant's history.

Retail divisions of Kroger work with more than 40 regional food banks around the nation that are affiliated with Second Harvest. In the past three years, Kroger twice has been named National Retailer of the Year by America's Second Harvest.

Kroger also expanded its partnership with America's Second Harvest in 2002 through the Grocery Alliance program. Under this program, Kroger's retail divisions are working more closely with America's Second Harvest food banks and food-rescue organizations in their local communities to generate greater awareness of hunger relief programs, share best practices in raising food donations, and seek new donation opportunities through various activities.

America's Second Harvest provided emergency food assistance to more than 23 million hungry Americans in 2002, including 9 million children and more than 2 million seniors.
