Secretary of Transportation Rodney Slater has announced that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is extending to Dec 15, 2000, the deadline for comments on the hours of service (HOS)proposal.

The extension was granted because the Department of Transportation wants to develop more data on its HOS proposal that it believes will come from three public roundtables. These will focus on topics identified in the comment process on proposed revisions to HOS regulations. Each roundtable will last two days and will be designed to elicit in-depth discussion and exchange of supporting data. Roundtables will convene from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm September 25-26 in Chevy Chase MD, and Sept 28-29 and October 5-6 in Washington DC. Topics will include:

    - Fatigue research, enforcement, and economic impact of revising proposed rules.

    - Sleeper berth requirements, communication with drivers during rest or break periods, and end-of-workweek rest periods.

    - Categories of carrier operations, on-board recorders, and exemptions to the proposed rule.

Participation in roundtable discussions are by invitation only. About 45 invitations were sent out, though members of the public may attend any roundtable as observers.
