J Sainsbury has awarded an £8-million contract to Ryder to operate the supermarket company's home delivery operation. Based at a 170,000-square-foot order picking center in Park Royal, North London, England, Ryder will route local deliveries to satellite distribution centers.

Six delivery slots — one every two hours — are run between 10 am and 10 pm Monday to Saturday, plus another three slots Sunday, using a dedicated fleet of 140 delivery vans supported by a large refrigerated trailer fleet. A software system has been installed to organize and control routing and scheduling. Ryder is already responsible for home delivery covering 334 Sainsbury stores in the United Kingdom, with dedicated teams working out of each individual store, supported by a fleet of multi-compartment refrigerated 3.5-tonne vans that make doorstep deliveries after orders are taken through Sainsbury's Internet service. The contract also includes vehicle maintenance support and specialist staff training.
