New York Asks Truckers to Store Donations

New York State Transportation commissioner Joseph H Boardman has asked truckers who may be transporting unsolicited goods for the World Trade Center recovery efforts to phone the World Trade Center Relief Fund at 800-801-8092 before they attempt to make delivery.

“There is no way that we will ever be able to express our gratitude to all of the people who have been donating so generously of their time, talents, and goods in this time of unprecedented need,” said Boardman. “There is, however, no more space to safely and securely manage any more donations or equipment at the site. If donors register their donations with the World Trade Center Relief Fund and store them locally, we will be able to keep track of the items and make them available to responders as they are needed.”

According to Boardman, New York State has established five donation-warehouse locations to accept goods that have already begun rolling toward New York City. Three sites are in New York State, and one each are in the neighboring states of Connecticut and New Jersey.

Truckers en route with donations must first call the World Trade Center Relief Fund so they can be directed to the correct site. Drivers of these trucks should be prepared to release a manifest to the warehouse manager upon arrival so that the donated items can be stored properly and retrieved as needed.

Traveler and traffic information for the New York City area is available at the www.dot.state.ny.us/roads/rc11a. web site.

New York State reminds the nation that money is still an immediate need. Monetary donations may be sent to the New York State World Trade Center Relief Fund at PO Box 5028, Albany NY 12205.
