The Steel Tank Institute (STI) has obtained a Underwriters Laboratories (UL) listing for Gen-Tank, a small, rectangular aboveground storage tank that can be used to store emergency supplies of power generator fuels. This listing means that the tank design itself includes internal or external structural supports capable of withstanding heavy loads of generator equipment mounted directly on top of the tank.

Two tank designs have been successfully tested by STI and approved under the Gen-Tank listing. The flange-type design is available as a single-wall, double-wall secondary containment, fire-resistant, or protected tank. The design includes a 3" flange that runs along the top and bottom edge on two sides of the tank. Gussets supporting up to 6,000 pounds each, are installed vertically at the points where the generator support structure is to be attached. Tank size can range up to 465" long, 136" wide, and 48" high with a maximum capacity of 13,237 gallons.

The second design is a protected tank with the support system constructed within the interstitial space created by the secondary containment tank system. Capacities for this design can range up to 12,303 gallons, with a maximum outer size of 465" long, 137" wide, and 55" high. Support beams can be any length, up to 144" long, and can hold up to 17,500 pounds per beam, with multiple beams placed to support additional loads or attachment requirements.
