Gossner Foods Inc, a Logan UT-based dairy producer, has opened a new Swiss cheese plant in Burley ID. This 150,000-square-foot plant plant initially will have 25 workers, and as many as 60 will be hired when full capacity is reached, according to plant officials.

This is expected to be an economic boon to Burley, which along with Heyburn ID lost 263 jobs when a Simplot potato processing operation closed almost two years ago.

In other news, dairy processor Saputo Inc plans to close its cheese manufacturing plant in Harrowsmith, Ontario, Canada. The plant will cease operations June 28, 2006, and its activities will be integrated into other Saputo facilities. In all, 89 employees will be affected, most of whom will be allowed to transfer to company plants elsewhere.
