Lykes Expands North America-Africa Service Lykes Lines is expanding its North America-Africa multipurpose service after absorbing the CCAL business into its portfolio. Acquisition of CCAL by Americana Ships (the CP Ships management company under which Lykes operates) was completed Aug 31, 2000. The move allows Lykes to improve services to and from the United States Midwest via Montreal and to add a direct call at Toronto during summer months when the St Lawrence River is open.

Lykes upgraded its service in July when it launched a two-loop North America-Africa service in conjunction with CCAL. This improved frequency and transit times for customers in North America, Mexico, South and West Africa, and Brazil. It also offered shippers in Philadelphia PA a direct service and enhanced connections to and from New York NY and Baltimore MD.

In South Africa, CCAL already had appointed Mitchell Cotts Maritime, which also represents Lykes, as its agent from Sept 1, 2000. Both Mitchell Cotts and King & Son, the former agent, are part of the Grincor group, ensuring a smooth handover.

The North America-Africa service offers an East Coast loop and a Gulf of Mexico loop and carries containers, roll-on/roll-off, breakbulk, and bulk cargoes. Both offer reefer capacity.

The East Coast loop, sailing once every 15 days, calls Montreal, Philadelphia, Savannah GA, Durban, Cape Town, Philadelphia, and Montreal.

The Gulf loop - calling Durban, Cape Town, Salvador, Savannah, New Orleans LA, Houston TX, and Veracruz operates northbound only.
