Springfield MO-based Prime Inc, which has acquired about 13% of KLLM Transport Services shares, is considering merging with or purchasing the company, which is headquartered in Richland MS. In a regulatory filing, Robert Low, president of Prime, said he plans "exploratory discussions" that may deal with a merger or sale of KLLM, or a reorganization of the firm. Low recently purchased 250,000 shares of KLLM common stock for $1.5 million, or $6.06 per share. He owns the New Palace Casino in Biloxi MS.

A privately held company, Prime operates refrigerated and flatbed truck operations. KLLM transports both refrigerated and dry freight.

BNSF, Canadian National To Combine Services Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp (BNSF) and Canadian National Railway Co (CN) have announced plans to combine operations. The end-to-end combination creates 50,000 miles of track stretching from Halifax to the Gulf Coast and on the United States and Canadian West Coast offering shippers enhanced single-line service.

BNSF currently has more than 34,000 route miles of track in 28 states and two Canadian provinces, serving all major ports on the West Coast and the Gulf of Mexico. The company also operates the routes between Southern California and Chicago IL and between the Pacific Northwest and Chicago. CN operates 16,000 route miles in nine Canadian provinces and 15 US states. The CN system spans Canada and mid-America from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to the Gulf of Mexico.

However, action by the federal government has placed a hold on all pending rail mergers for at least 15 months.

Eagle Family Foods Inc Honors Mark VII Mark VII Transportation Co Inc, a subsidiary of MSAS Global Logistics, was honored recently by Eagle Family Foods Inc with the company's Outstanding Performance Carrier Award for 1999. Will Lynch, president and chief executive officer of the Tarrytown NY-based manufacturer of grocery products, presented the award to Connie Prong, a strategic account manager in Mark VII's Toronto, Ontario, office.

Mark VII's initial work for the company in 1998 involved shipment from Eagle Family Food's facility in Waterloo NY using TemStar reefers. By the end of 1999, Mark VII's business with the company had grown to more than 700 intermodal shipments and included just-in-time over-the-road service.
