Qualcomm Inc is celebrating the 15th anniversary of its OmniTRACS satellite mobile communications system for real-time data communications, automatic vehicle tracking, and satellite positioning for the transportation industry.

In the 15 years since the OmniTRACS mobile communications system was introduced, Qualcomm has shipped nearly 480,000 commercial units to businesses in 39 nations on four continents. The success of the OmniTRACS system provided the basis for Qualcomm's expansion into other wireless products and services.

More than 1,600 United States truckload fleets and 2,000 NAFTA truckload fleets depend on the OmniTRACS satellite mobile communications system and Qualcomm's Network Management Center (NMC) to communicate with drivers, monitor vehicle location, and supply customer service. Fleet messages, ranging from text messages and vehicle positioning to driver performance and trailer management data, are sent via satellite through the NMC to dispatch centers throughout the United States. The NMC network processes more than seven million data transactions daily.
